Display alternate data streams of the file with normal command line tools
Published : 2014-02-27.
Last updated : 2017-05-02.
Show files containing alternate data streams with the command line command parameter:
dir /R
Example, the program Putty is downloaded from the internet and has an alternate data stream:
D:\Download>dir /R
Volume in drive D is Data
Volume Serial Number is 5966-FF82
Directory of D:\Download
01-02-2014 14:17 <DIR> .
01-02-2014 14:17 <DIR> ..
23-02-2014 10:04 495.616 putty.exe
26 putty.exe:Zone.Identifier:$DATA
1 File(s) 495.616 bytes
2 Dir(s) 19.165.523.968 bytes free
The text contents of the alternate data stream can be shown using the command:
more < [FileName]:[DataStreamName]
Example:
D:\Download>more < putty.exe:Zone.Identifier
[ZoneTransfer]
ZoneId=3
This example shows that the file is downloaded from the internet (Zone 3 is the Internet). Other ZoneTransfer ZoneId's
are:
- INTRANET = 1
- TRUSTED = 2
- INTERNET = 3
- UNTRUSTED = 4
Because of the ZoneId 3, the downloaded program upon starting shows the security warning:
While files from the Internet can be useful, this file can potentially harm your computer. Only run Software from publishers
you trust.
