A great article about the possibilities of Microsoft Lync by Hewlett and Packard

Lync is one of those tools for unified communications and collaboration
(UC&C). It combines several communication methods - such as voice, email,
instant messaging and video conferencing - into one system. One of the
most widely used UC&C solutions is Microsoft Lync. Introduced in 2007 -
then known as Microsoft Office Communicator - Lync has expanded to provide
an array of features. It includes voice calling, instant messaging, video
conferencing and more for mobile and desktop devices.
Lync is integrated in Skype for Business these days and HPE has removed the article.
