Error 5 restoring or backing up SQL 2005 database

Backup of SQL Server 2005 fails with error 5 [Cannot open backup device 'drive:\foldername'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).]

When running a backup to a folder or a restore from a folder with a default installation of Microsoft SQL server 2005 [express], an operating system error 5 might occur.
The default SQL Server service is running with the user account [ NTAUTHORITY\NetworkService]. This account is member of a local security group:
SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$<servername$><instancename>.

Fixing your backup and restore problems can be done by giving the SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$<servername$><instancename> local group Modify rights to the folder.
